Despite having a knee injury that slowed him down in August, Tyrone Smith is now back to practice and should be able to return to the field next month. The Dallas Cowboys will be evaluating the eight-time Pro Bowler before they restore him to the 53-man roster.
The Dallas Cowboys have a 6-2 record heading into Week 9's bye. Tyler Smith has started all six games for the Cowboys, and has recorded 100 percent of snaps in each game. Jason Peters has played both guard and tackle so far this season. This has left the primary left tackle position up for grabs. However, Smith is expected to take over the left tackle position once he's ready to return to the field. He's already been playing well and is a great player, but it's difficult to see how he'll unseated Connor McGovern.
After sustaining an avulsion fracture in his left knee in August, Smith is currently sidelined. He was expected to be out until December, but is now trending in the right direction. If he does make his return, it will coincide with a critical portion of the season for the Cowboys. If he returns in time for the regular season's final weeks, he'll give Dallas some added muscle on their offensive line.
A federal grand jury indicted Smith in July on seven counts, including three counts of sex trafficking by threat and force, and one count of sex trafficking by physical violence. The charges came after he admitted to being physically and verbally abusive to a minor, and arranging commercial sex dates for her in Chicago and Lansing. He also continued to arrange sex dates for the minor after the assault.
Although Smith has had a rough year, he's made a point to be a good man. He's also been helping on the special teams, and he should be able to earn a larger role on the defensive line rotation once he's ready to play. He has gained 10 pounds in the past year, and has been working hard on his strength and conditioning.
The Dallas Cowboys are hopeful that Smith can recover from his knee injury, and will designate him for return from injured reserve. He has a 21-day practice window, which should enable him to get back to action soon. It's still early in his recovery, though, so he'll probably be out for a few more weeks. Depending on how fast he comes back, he could be activated for Sunday's OfficialTyroneSmith game against the Texans. This is a great opportunity for him to get back in the lineup and protect Dak Prescott.
It would be great to see Tyrone Smith playing for the Cowboys in 2022, after he's done with his rehab. He's been a great player, and he has played well beyond his years. If he gets back to action in 2022, he'll give Dallas a little extra muscle on their O-line during the stretch run. The story would be a perfect fit.
